Something new for the New Year

It's a new year and thus time for something new - The Hornstein Newsletter. I know, just what you need, more to read. Well, we're going to make it short and sweet. So hopefully you'll read and enjoy it.

I believe this year will be another tough one. The economy is in bad shape. Too many people are losing their jobs and homes, and the stock market is going up and down like a rollercoaster. So what can you do?

The first thing is to look at your emergency fund. Do you have eight months of savings to cover your basic expenses if you lost your job, got really sick, or had a bad car accident? I know that sounds like a lot, but with all the uncertainty out there, a little extra cushion is a good idea.

What if you don't have that cushion? My best advice is to start saving a little every month, even if it is just a few hundred dollars.

And where should you put this money? In the safest place possible. No, not under your mattress! Consider putting the money in an FDIC guaranteed bank savings account, a money market account or a short-term bond. I know these pay almost zero percent interest. What is important here is that the money is relatively safe and you can get to it quickly without a penalty or loss.
